Gear Up Team
An Experienced, Passionate Team

The C-CREO Gear Up Team has deep experience in education and shares a genuine passion for helping students prepare for college and career. The Success Coaches on each middle and high school campus are committed to creating positive changes for educational communities in Santa Cruz County. The College and Career Liaison at the C-CREO Hub is available for outreach activities, as well as providing site-based services. Together, we strive to provide equity for our cohort of students and build sustainability for generations to come.

Alfredo Velasquez

Santa Cruz County School Superintendent

Alfredo Velasquez describes himself as “a proud resident of Santa Cruz County”. He was born and raised in Nogales, Arizona and was determined to earn an education and return to contribute to his community. After earning a BA in Elementary Education, Alfredo joined the NUSD #1 as a first-grade teacher in 1993. He has since earned two Masters Degrees: one in Bilingual/Multicultural Education and Educational Leadership. In 2006, Alfredo changed course. He was elected Santa Cruz County School Superintendent.  In this capacity he works with local, state, and federal entities to identify and service the needs of Santa Cruz County schools as well as serve as the fiscal agent for the school districts. His mission as County School Superintendent is to support district superintendents, administrators, teachers, parents and students as well as community organizations through collaboration of services, resources, and funding to prepare students in Santa Cruz County in becoming successful life-long learners.

Maya Donnelly

Chief Deputy and Grants Director

Maya Donnelly is the Grants Program Director in the office of Santa Cruz County School Superintendent, Alfredo I. Velásquez. She grew up in Nogales and graduated from Nogales High School and the University of Arizona with a BA in Elementary Education. She began her teaching career in NUSD #1, teaching at A.J. Mitchell, Lincoln Elementary, and Wade Carpenter Middle School for 19 years. In 2016, she began working for Mr. Velasquez managing his grants office. The programs Maya works on are the CREO/Youth CareerConnect Program at Nogales High School and Rio Rico High School, which includes the MetroMatematicas and Lean Six Sigma curriculum, Santa Cruz County Arts for Learning in partnership with Young Audiences, C-CREO Summer Youth Camps, and now the C-CREO Gear Up Program. She is eager to get Geared Up and help students and families gain early awareness and readiness of  undergraduate programs. She feels great pride in giving back to the community that has given so much to her and her family.

Kerri Munoz

Gear Up Director

I have recently been promoted to the Director of the Santa Cruz County Gear Up Program.  Previously, my title was the Associate Director of Family and Community Engagement and Gear Up 2 Work Internship Coordinator. Assisting local students to prepare for life after high school has been extremely rewarding to me as a “Nogalian” and an educator.  Prior to working with the Santa Cruz County School Superintendent’s Office, I taught for the Nogales Unified School District.  I spent 10 years at Desert Shadows Middle School teaching 6th graders the importance of Ancient and Local History.  In 2018, I joined the Nogales Apaches and enjoyed teaching World History and coaching the Girls High School Tennis Team.  Go Apaches!!! I joined the Santa Cruz County School Superintendent’s Office in August 2021. I have a BA in Political Science and a teaching degree from Pima Community College.

Lisa Monge

Gear Up Hub Liaison

Lisa’s current role as the C-CREO Gear Up’s college and career access center “C-CREO Hub liaison” helps students and families reach their educational goals.  Lisa has been working in different aspects and roles of education as a teacher, counselor, Gear Up coach and college instructor for over 18 years. She is a proud Nogales, Arizona native and attended school from k-12 in Nogales.  Lisa enjoys spending family time with her husband, two boys and other family members.

She received her bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Spanish Literature from the University of  Arizona, her master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Northern Arizona University and a post-teacher certification from Pima Community College. Lisa is excited to be a part of the GEAR-UP team and all the wonderful partnerships that have been created through the local program.

As the C-CREO hub liaison her goals are to help families and students be prepared for their next steps in finishing middle school, high school and beyond.  The Hub is open to all members of the community, we are here to help answer and assist in reaching academic and life goals.

Manny Gonzalez

Gear Up Success Coach

Manny Gonzalez was born and raised in Nogales, Arizona, where he developed a deep love for

his community and the importance of education. After proudly serving in the United States Air Force, returned to Nogales and chased his passion for helping others by enrolling at the University of Arizona. There, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, equipping him with valuable insights into human behavior and motivation. Currently, Manny is advancing his education further by pursuing a Master’s degree in School Counseling through Prescott College.

As a Gear Up Success Coach, he dedicates his career to guiding students through their educational adventures, empowering them to overcome challenges and embrace opportunities. His commitment to fostering success in young people is evident in his daily interactions and support. He is passionate about helping students in his community achieve their goals, realize their full potential, and turn their dreams into reality.

In addition to his work in education, Manny is an active member of the Santa Cruz County Search and Rescue team, where he demonstrates his dedication to community service and safety.

Manny’s story reflects a profound commitment to personal growth, community engagement, and the belief that every student deserves the support they need to thrive.

Victor Villalobos

Gear Up Success Coach

Victor Villalobos is a dedicated professional currently serving as a C-CREO Success Coach in the office of Santa Cruz County School Superintendent, Alfredo Velasquez.  He grew up in Nogales and later moved to Rio Rico where he graduated from Rio Rico High School. He is a proud Arizona Wildcat graduate from The University of Arizona, where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Political Science with a focus on Public Management and Administration, with a Minor in Spanish. Victor’s career is marked by a commitment to public service and community engagement. He has held positions at the Santa Cruz County Superior Court and Recorder’s Office, where he managed legal records, coordinated court schedules, and provided bilingual support. His experience also includes working as a Paraprofessional with the Santa Cruz Valley Unified School District #35 where he demonstrated his passion of making a positive impact in students’ lives. He is a motivated individual who strives to exceed expectations with a strong foundation in critical thinking, problem-solving, communication and a background in managing and administrating diverse case assignments. Victor is continuously seeking to apply his  skills and values in new ways to support the Gear Up team in preparing the next generation of students to succeed in post-secondary education.

Luis Aguirre Jr.

Gear Up Success Coach

Luis Aguirre Jr. was born and raised in Nogales/Rio Rico, where he attended A.J. Mitchell Elementary School. At a young age, he had an interest in sports and also in assisting the community even if it was just a simple gesture. He graduated from Rio Rico High School and went on to attend Cochise Community College where he received his Associates Degree and the University of Arizona where he majored and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism. During his time at the UA, he was actively involved in both the Daily Wildcat and K.A.M.P. Radio covering the women’s softball team as a beat reporter and broadcaster. After college, he came back to Nogales/Rio Rico to give back to the community that raised him. He worked at the Santa Cruz County Justice of the Peace Court for 3 years and was a part of establishing specialty courts which were implemented by Honorable Judge Emilio G. Velasquez, for individuals who have substance abuse or mental health complications.

At the moment he is currently working at the Santa Cruz County Superintendent’s Office as a Gear Up Success Coach, to spread awareness on education services that are available throughout our community.

Luzdaniela Martinez

Gear Up Success Coach

Luzdaniela Martinez is a Gear Up Success Coach and a proud lifelong resident of Santa Cruz County. After graduating from Rio Rico High School in 2018, she earned her AA in Liberal Arts from Pima Community College in 2020. Her passion for education and community service led her to roles as a Continuing Education Assistant Program Coordinator and a Workforce Development Youth Specialist, where she honed her skills in student support and career readiness where she had the opportunity to support individuals in achieving their educational and career goals. She also attended Arizona State University, where she continued her academic journey and became a member of the ODK National Leadership Honor Society and earned her BA in Liberal Studies with a concentration in The Three Cultures and a minor in Film and Media in 2024.

She is excited to give back to her community by empowering students to reach their full potential.
