The Application

Scholarship applications might be electronic or in paper, and most of them require an academic resume, a letter of recommendation, transcripts, an essay, or a combination of these elements.  Regardless of the submittal process, electronic or in person to a school counselor, increase your award by follow some of these tips:

Academic Resume

The academic resume will include different categories of awards, sports, club and organization memberships, and volunteer work you have done throughout your high schools years.  List all activity that you have participated in, specially if you believe it contributed to other’s development or benefit.  Here are some examples:

Letter of Recommendation

When asking for a letter of recommendation, it is important to select a person that is willing and able to support you in a positive way with a good reference.  Make sure you provide enough time for someone to create a letter that goes with your character.  Provide as much information about yourself, along with information regarding your interests, things you have done and accomplished, your goals and academic performance, so that your letter of recommendation is aligned with the vision of the scholarship you are applying for.

Here’s a example of a letter of recommendation

Transcripts need to be official or unofficial and the scholarship will be very specific about they type of transcript required for the application.  You can request a copy of your unofficial transcripts through Parchment.com.

Essay

Perhaps the most important element of a scholarship application is the essay.  The essay prompt will be provided to you along with the word count if required by the organization or institution providing the scholarship.  Start with an outline to organize your ideas.  Ask someone to give you feedback on your essay and adjust if need be.  Use applications that can assist you with spelling and grammar.  Read it a couple of times before submitting.
